We are working with Moody Gardens on a project to mitigate shoreline erosion at their golf course. During the first phase of the project, volunteers helped us make over 1,100 bags filled with oyster shell.
Now that we have the bags, our next phase is to place the bags in a waterway along the course. This will create a breakwater along the shoreline to protect the shoreline from further erosion. It will also help create a new oyster reef habitat!
We’re inviting volunteers to help with this project. The three main roles for this project will be (1) transporting the bags from the parking lot to the worksite via golf carts, (2) moving the bags from the golf carts to the volunteers in the water, (3) getting in the water to stack the bags. Volunteers can rotate through the jobs if interested or stick to one spot.
Water-based volunteers should wear old tennis shoes or water shoes (closed-toe, no sandals), moisture-wicking clothes that you don’t mind getting wet/dirty. Pants are preferred for this role.
Land-based volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals) and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Light-weight pants (not jeans) are recommended.
We also recommend bringing a hat, towel, refillable water bottle, and sunscreen. There are restrooms available for use during the event or to change clothes before leaving. We will provide water stations to refill your bottle and gloves.
