Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, but there are many ways you can get involved, make a difference, and invest in our Bay all month long! This page will be updated throughout the month with opportunities for you and your family to participate in Earth Month events and initiatives featuring the Galveston Bay Foundation and our partners.

A Billion Acts of Green are happening across the planet. Join Harris County Precinct 2 and the Galveston Bay Foundation at Bay Area Community Center as we share actions you can do to help improve the quality of our planet and water sources! Games and door prizes included.

April 21 – April 24
Thousands of birds make their way to Galveston Island each spring as part of their northward migration across the Gulf of Mexico from Central and South America. See more than 200 species of brightly-colored birds in this prime location along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Come visit our booth at Moody Gardens to learn what we’re doing to ensure a healthy Bay for the birds!
Sweetwater Preserve Birding Trip No. 1
April 22 | 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
New for 2022, this trip takes you to Galveston Bay Foundation’s private Sweetwater Preserve not generally open to the public. The trip starts at Sweetwater’s viewing platform overlooking brackish ponds, mud flats and West Galveston Bay. From there guests will move to the property’s freshwater ponds, woodlots, and grasslands as they bird their way to Sweetwater Lake. Expect to see a wide variety of birds including late wintering waterfowl, egrets, herons, rails, shorebirds, gulls, terns, hawks, and grassland species.
Sweetwater Preserve Birding Trip No. 2
April 23 | 7:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Sweetwater Preserve Birding Trip No. 2 follows the same route as Trip No. 1, but guests will get to experience the property and its feathered visitors in all their morning glory!
April 22 – April 24
Hear from the Galveston Bay Foundation and other local organizations about how we help preserve our planet. We will demonstrate the importance of rain barrels, and on April 23 and 24, we will demonstrate how to engineer a shoreline to prevent erosion. The event will also feature a wildlife refuge tram tour, pop-up science labs, atmospheric balloon launch, games, films, and more!
April 22 – April 24
LGBT+ Outdoorfest returns to Rainbow Ranch in Groesbeck, Texas, for a gathering of camping, kayaking, hiking, education, community, and much more! Galveston Bay Foundation will lead a workshop teaching participants how to explore the habitats around their campsite or hiking trail and identify the plants and animals sharing that space with them. We will also discuss how to use free and affordable tools that are helpful to have.
April 29 – May 2
Started in 2016 as a competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the City Nature Challenge has grown into an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their cities. During this annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see not only what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal, but also which city can gather the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most people in the event.
March 1 – June 15
Whether you are a business or homeowner, join the Galveston Bay Foundation, Texan by Nature, and Audubon Texas in protecting migrating birds passing through Texas by turning off all non-essential lighting on buildings from 11 pm to 6 am every night from March 1 – June 15. Where conflicts apply, prioritize lights out during the Peak Migration period (April 22 – May 12) when migratory bird traffic through Texas is at its highest.

Make a hands-on difference for your Bay this Earth Month! Help restore coastal prairie habitat and plant a bioswale at our headquarters in Kemah. All ages are welcome, children under 18 must have an adult guardian participate with them. Pre-registration is required to participate. Space is limited. If registration is full, please fill out our waitlist form.
The Galveston Bay Foundation continues to raise critical funds to help improve the resiliency and health of Galveston Bay. Your gifts make it possible for us to restore oyster reefs and wetlands, improve water quality, conserve thousands of acres of vital habitat in and around Galveston Bay, and provide environmental education to thousands of area students. The Galveston Bay Dolphin Research Program is a collaboration between the Galveston Bay Foundation and the Environmental Institute of Houston at the University of Houston-Clear Lake dedicated to learning about the bottlenose dolphins that live in our Bay. GDRP studies the ecology, behavior, and health of this population. Boat-based observations surveys are essential to our long-term research. As an All At Once nonprofit partner, Jack Johnson’s foundation is matching donations contributed to the Galveston Bay Foundation at his concert on August 26 at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion or those made directly to our organization from April 1 – October 15, up to a total of $2,500.

The Galveston Bay Report Card is a citizen-driven, scientific analysis of the health of Galveston Bay. Implemented by the Galveston Bay Foundation and the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), the report card’s goal is to engage community members in meaningful discussion about Bay health topics while also inspiring them to take actions that protect and preserve the Bay.
