Carter joined Galveston Bay Foundation as Nursery Operations Specialist in October 2024. Thousands of hours seed collecting, botanizing and documenting the prairies of south Harris and mainland Galveston counties, along with time in Brazoria, Chambers and Galveston Island, has given him a particular insight into the local flora and state of the surviving wild places of the area. Contributing seeds to just about every major conservation growing program in Houston during that time, he’s also worked at nurseries and as a landscaper for around 10 years, more recently working as a consultant to local green projects and making plant surveys (as he finally feels confident keying out sedges!). He intends to improve the quality, scale and diversity of the grasses and wildflowers grown at GBF’s Ecocenter and used in restoration, in addition to helping facilitate fun and informative experiences for those volunteering and during outreach opportunities. Born in League City, childhood trips to Armand Bayou Nature Center and much time spent in the woods and swamps around his grandparent’s home in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, sparked a love for nature that years of hiking, foraging and volunteering in conservation has only intensified. Whenever he’s dragged inside, he enjoys cooking and spending time with his family, friends and cats.
